Fishing the Mutton Spawn in Key West

What's going on Guys? I just wanted to update everyone on what's going on with the club. Well, I decided to restart a new blogging system to make it easier for everyone to post either fishing reports or news or whatever they want. This will be a great source of publicity for the guides in the club. Please feel free to post your fishing reports and pictures of clients.

Well now to the good part, sort of. Back in May we decided to do a Mutton Spawn trip to Key West. With all the details worked out, and I use the term very loosely, we decided to pack up the rods and headed southwest.

After a temporary delay by Fred ( He conveniently couldn't find his glasses or cell phone ), Eric and myself, picked him up and headed for the Overseas Highway. We arrived at Ocean Side marina around 4:30pm where we met up with Orlando, his friend Eddie and Eddie's son and headed out. We finally get to the I Glass and set up. The only action of the day was a Jack that Orlando caught and a couple Yellowtails that Eric, Fred and I caught.

We called it a night and headed back in. We made it to the hotel around 9:30pm, took a shower and headed to Duval street. After a couple slices of pizza and a couple drinks we made our way to our favorite spot on all of Duval Street. We said hi to the many patrons of this joint and called it a night, at 3am. With T.J. and Wayne finally arriving, we had new hopes for Saturday.

Saturday Eric, T.J., Wayne and Myself were on T.J.'s boat. While Fred, Orlando, Eddie and his son were off on Orlando's boat. The fishing was SLOW to say the least but we still managed to pick a couple critters off the bottom.I was named the Jigging Rod Hog because, well, I was catching fish with the Jigging Rod.I managed to catch a 12lb Red Grouper right after T.J. put down the rod. Eric continued to catch Muttons and Yellowtails. Meanwhile Wayne and T.J. were bringing up some nice Pink Snappers off the bottom. We called it a day. Went back in. Cleaned the boat and had the Hurricane Hole Restaurant cook up the catch.

Sunday we bid farewell to Wayne in the morning and were off again. This time it was Eric, T.J., Fred, and Myself on one boat and Orlando and his crew on Orly's boat. Not much happened Sunday with the exception of a nice Strawberry Grouper that I caught and a 5lb Mutton that Fred caught. We decided to call it a day by 1pm and headed home. We stopped at the Laurel-Lei for some Piña Coladas and a bathroom break. Eric blew a seal in the engine on the way back home and we were stopped at the Hess gas station in Florida City where T.J. burned his wrist and Eric, always seeing the good in bad situations, had another "refreshment break."

Over all it was a great trip with some great people and great stories to tell. I want to plan a Lobster Mini Season outing and then a Snook Outing somewhere up north in the next two months. Please let me know what you guys think about the next two trips.
